You may have missed the LA Galaxy/Portland Timbers game Sunday night as you were poring over the details of your bracket. If so, you didn’t miss much. But the game did lead to the social media fun the day after the contest. The video has more than 31,000 retweets and 46,000 likes, and you can see why. Diego Chara is diving through space, the sea, and other mind-trippy things. It’s absolutely amazing and one of the best videos any MLS team has ever put out. But naturally, the league office didn’t find this video as funny as the internet did, because, according to SI’s Grant Wahl, “the league office is going to address it” with the Galaxy:
PRO referees chief Peter Walton says he had seen the video and didn’t want to be involved. A Galaxy spokesperson, meanwhile, said the intent was to put together a fun piece of content for social media purposes. A Galaxy spokesperson said the point of the video was to be funny, which was incredibly obvious, and because the league is now talking to the Galaxy about this, videos like it probably won’t be made again. The league obviously won’t take kindly to a team pointing out an officiating mistake, but that should be an impetus to better officiating, not a social media video crackdown.
